Before Your Procedure
You will need to complete a bowel preparation (‘bowel prep’) by drinking a prescribed cleansing solution to completely clean out your colon. This is essential for clear visualization. Your doctor’s office will provide specific timing and dietary instructions. Plan to arrange a ride home, as you will not be able to drive after sedation.

During Your Procedure
You will receive Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC), meaning you will be comfortably asleep and relaxed. Most patients breathe on their own during MAC sedation; the anesthesia team determines the safest approach for each patient. While you are asleep, the doctor gently inserts the colonoscope through the rectum to examine the colon.

After Your Procedure
Most patients rest briefly under observation before being discharged with a driver. Mild bloating or gas is common and typically resolves within a day. Your doctor will discuss any findings, including polyp removal, at follow-up.
