Assessment of GERD, ulcers, or upper abdominal pain.

What to Expect

A quick procedure, typically around 5-15 minutes.

1

Before Your Procedure

You will need to fast, typically for 6-8 hours before your procedure, to ensure your stomach is empty. Your doctor’s office will confirm exact timing and any medication adjustments needed beforehand.

2

During Your Procedure

You will receive Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) so you will be comfortably asleep throughout the procedure. Most patients breathe on their own during MAC sedation; the anesthesia team determines the safest approach for each patient. While you are sleeping, the endoscope is gently passed through your mouth into the upper digestive tract. The procedure is typically quick, usually around 5-15 minutes.

3

After Your Procedure

You will be monitored for a short recovery period after sedation before being discharged with a driver. Mild throat discomfort is common and usually resolves within a day.
