Screening of the sigmoid colon and rectum.

Evaluate Rectal Bleeding

Or changes in bowel habits that need investigation.

What to Expect

Often performed without sedation, with same-day recovery.

1

Before Your Procedure

You will need to complete a bowel preparation to clean the lower colon for optimal visualization. Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, this may involve enemas or a limited bowel prep.

2

During Your Procedure

In many cases, this procedure can be performed without sedation, although sedation may be used if needed. The doctor inserts a flexible camera through the rectum to examine the lower colon.

3

After Your Procedure

Because sedation is often not used, many patients are able to drive themselves home and resume normal activities the same day. If sedation was used, plan for a driver, as you would for a colonoscopy.
